Effective Communication Skills For Couples Keeps Relationships Strong

By Myrtle Cash

Communication can either make or break a relationship. In the beginning of most new relationships, the opposing party is willing to stop and listen to the other. However, as time progresses on, and life gets in the way, communicating with each other begins to become more and more difficult. It is important that effective communication skills for couples are practiced throughout the entire arrangement.

Many marriage counselors teach that the only way to keep a relationship healthy is for each individual in the relationship to keep an open line of communication with the other. Unfortunately, life can be to blame for severing an individual's ability to be able to communicate with their partner. Often times, people are stressed out over certain occurrences within their personal lives that they neglect to realize that they are in a relationship, and that the other person is going through the same occurrences with them.

It takes two people in order to make a relationship, whether it be a girlfriend boyfriend relationship, or a marriage to work. While many new couples rave that they feel that they can tell their partner everything and they will still love them no matter what, a lot of individuals that have been in a relationship for a long period of time feel differently. These individuals get so wrapped up in their personal lives, that they neglect the other person.

While the party that has the floor to speak is doing so, the other individual waits until that individual is done, before they respond. Although active listening sounds like an easy technique to grasp, this is often the hardest thing for couples to practice. It is easier for people who have been in relationships for a short frame of time to practice active listening, than it is for people that have been in a relationship for a longer period of time.

Life is monotonous, with work and family life, it seems like there is always something going on that keeps you away from the other person in the relationship with you. One important thing that individuals that are involved in a relationship need to do is set aside time to speak with one another. This allows both parties to maintain the connection that they have amongst themselves.

There are a lot of people that have to set aside a specific time every day or every week to talk to the other individual in the relationship. This enables the communication lines to remain open. Time should be set aside on a regular basis. There are some individuals that will set aside this time by going on a date, where they can spend time with one another and be apart from things that may distract them.

Talking to the other person in the relationship is not the same as connecting with them. There are a lot of people that form bad habits in their relationships by not connecting with the individual that they are in the relationship with. Anyone can tell someone to take out the trash or ask someone to do the dishes, these conversations do not equate to effective communicating.

These days, it can seem fairly difficult to practice effective communication skills for couples. Most people that are in a relationship barely get to spend the amount of time that they want to spend with their partner. When they do get the time, they lose the ability to speak to them freely.
