Common Mistakes in Setting Personal Goals

By Robert L. Campanelli

Setting personal goals require a lot from you simply because achieving goals means success and success does not come so easily. You need to work hard on it, be determined, have faith, know and apply relevant and smart strategies, and so on. You also need to be aware of errors that might hinder you from reaching your goals. So, make sure you avoid the following common mistakes in setting personal goals.

Setting Negative Goals The way you think about your personal goals can contribute on how you feel about them, and whether you will achieve them or not. For example, a lot of people set a goal to "lose weight." But, such goal connotes something negative. It is basically centered on something you do not want, and that is your weight. One positive way to reverse this without actually changing the results you want is by setting a goal to "be healthy."

Be a positive thinker. The struggles may be too heavy to bear if you are easily troubled with negative thoughts. It is important to look at the entire thing from an upbeat perspective. At the same time, makes sure that your objectives are not too general. The general goals can be broken down into profession, family, home, school, physical and spiritual. Establish priorities so you will know which should come first before the other.

Proceed according to stages. This is the purpose of the plan that was mentioned earlier. You need to set your goals in small components complete with the time and date for finishing each phase; the amount of work that has to be done; the details of the plan; and your observations. In other words, your objectives should be broken down in doable steps. If possible write your goal down on a piece of paper or encode the whole plan and save it on your computer. This will serve as your daily reminder of schedules, activities and intentions. Always make this conspicuous so you will never forget your goals.

They fear criticism. Some people do not want to be criticized. They hold back from setting good goals because sometimes other people tell them that they will never reach them, or they will just waste their money, effort, and time. You cannot avoid people who give destructive criticisms instead of those that can motivate you. However, you can do something to minimize the negative things you hear. You can surround yourself with people who also know the importance of goals. Be with people who have set or reached goals. And if you still receive criticisms, one way or another, use them as your stepping stones instead of stumbling blocks.

They are afraid to fail. Most people refuse to set goals because they are scared of failure. Fear of failure can be the greatest obstacle towards success. If you do not overcome your fear, you will never be successful in personal goal setting simply because people naturally avoid that which they fear the most. You must find out why are you terrified of failing then think of ways that will help you beat that fear. You need to be stronger than your fear.
