Veterans often note the knowledge and life-changing experiences that they gained while in the service. There are some important things to know when it comes to how to join the military.

There are different requirements and rules regarding who can enlist. These vary by country and military branch. Generally speaking, these forces look for individuals who are healthy and between the ages of 18 and 30 years old. In some cases, they may allow older or younger people to enlist.

The first major step is deciding on what branch you want to sign up for. Some people may have difficulty choosing and recruiters can help in this process. People may choose on family history and ancestors who have served in a particular branch. Often people base it on their own personal interests, such as individuals who enjoy being on the water who go into the Coast Guard or Navy. Talking to recruiters form different branches may also help individuals decide on what they want to go into.

People must be committed, as those who sign up must serve for a specific period of time. Many of the contracts extend for eight years and it is common for individuals to serve four of those years as active and the other four as inactive. The job of the recruiter is to get people to sign up. They will not always look at your best interest. Because of this, individuals must be confident in their decision and not buckle to pressure.

Furthermore, people should know how they want to be involved, such as full-time or part-time. Some people choose this as a full-time career. Others do it for a short time and set plans for schooling or a related job in the non-military sector when their time is up.

As soon as papers have been signed, boot camp or basic training needs to be done. This step is usually draining on a physical and mental level. Those who pass will be able to go forward and start their work. Generally, being involved in the military is a rewarding opportunity. The pay is good and individuals are given special benefits. Furthermore, they are constantly thanked and appreciated by the general public for their involvement.

It is important to understand that this is not the ideal setup for everyone. Although people who join will learn to be strong, disciplined and leaders. Those who are on active duty may be forced to live in different states and countries and may have to move around a lot. This has been known to put a strain on relationships, as these individuals may be away from the ones they love for months or years. The purpose of the military is to protect, especially in wars. Forces may be sent out to battle and people might have to kill. This reality should be accepted by anyone who wants to be involved.

Many people choose to join military forces to support their country. Through their time spent in service, they will learn new things and gain valuable skills. Those who are enlisted should be strong mentally and physically, as there are many different duties involved with this work.
