Child Psychiatry Apex Area Practitioners Can Provide Help

By Sherry Gross

It is usually unexpected to see indications of mental disturbances in children. But, statistically, a fourth of all children and adolescents will suffer a psychiatric disorder in any year. For those looking for help and care for child psychiatry Apex is a location that has many professionals to provide it.

Some children suffer from anxiety disorders and others from behavior disorders. Depression occurs in approximately two percent of children under twelve. That percentage doubles among adolescents.

During the teen years, alcohol and drug addictions may develop. Schizophrenia typically has an onset age of late teens to early twenties. It can also appear in early childhood although it is rare. Bipolar disorder is not as rare.

Mental disorder has no single cause in children. There are tendencies that are biological. Psychological and environmental issues may promote the development of certain mental disorders. Biological causal factors are related to abnormal levels of dopamine or serotonin in the brain.

It has been found that some disturbed individuals have larger or smaller lobes in the brain than found in those without a disorder. In addition, some areas of the brain may be more active in those children. Girls are more prone to mood disorders, such as depression, than boys.

A genetic component may be the cause in some cases. If they live with a parent who suffers mental health issues there is four times the likeliness of becoming mentally disturbed. This is true in comparison to children whose parents are mentally healthy. Thus, the upbringing provided by disturbed parents, may be a factor.

In the case of emotionally disturbed parents, they are not likely to be capable of providing a stable environment. The youngster may suffer emotional or physical abuse. If a parent dies or the subject is bullied at school, these can predispose him or her to develop a mental illness.

There are many other factors that cause or contribute to mental disorders. Included are poverty, exposure to conflict and divorce. Some indications of a disorder are boredom, performing poorly in school and frequent headaches. There may be nightmares. Regressive behavior such as bedwetting may also be a sign.

In many cases of mental illness, prescription medicine may be needed. Many psychiatrists provide care and psychotherapy concomitantly. Medicine is needed in severe cases. Extreme aggression, clinical depression, bipolar disorder or childhood schizophrenia require medication to control them.

In some cases a medical problem that requires medication may exacerbate the psychiatric disorder. In the case of depression it may be connected to medication taken for a thyroid condition. Many psychiatric conditions improve faster when medication is used in conjunction with psychotherapy.

The briefest treatment period for a child is six months. In this amount of time significant improvement can be facilitated. Improved relationships with family and friends are noted. Without treatment they may get worse.

Some antidepressants are more effective than others. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors show consistent success. This makes them the preferred medication for depressed children. Bipolar disorders are managed by using Risperidone, Quetapine or Aripiprazole if he or she is under ten. Whenever a child is placed on these medicines, he or she must be under the strict supervision of a psychiatrist.
