Reasons To Consider College Counseling

By Lila Bryant

College life is a very exciting new phase in the life of any student. It means that all your hard work, perseverance, and patience has paid off. Not every single one of your senior high school batch can really go, so if you are going, or are already halfway through college education, then congratulations. You, by far, are luckier than most of the population in the country whose majority is composed of people who have dropped out of university or never even went to one.

However, there are two sides to everything. While it is true that your unsupervised lifestyle can bring about a lot of unrestrained freedom, it can also bring about loads of tremendous pressure. It is not all like in the movies where college students are portrayed as the happy go lucky individuals who go ahead and waste money on booze and drugs. No, not at all, especially if your aim is to really finish. All the pressures of college can even break a student, and they may need college counseling to stand back up.

Most people in the university belt are not really inclined to the idea of having a counseling session. They see it as fit only for crazy people. Well, they could be partly right, but it is not limited only for those who are not right in their head. This aims to help you in your struggles as you adjust to university living. In fact, this may well be the only thing that might keep you going.

As aforementioned, this is not only limited for mental health screenings. Counseling types include career exploration, dispute resolutions, personal sessions, and academic advisement. Opening up to another can be either fairly easy or very hard, according to each personality type. Hence, these can be done whether individually, personally or via online, and even in groups, in the form of fun workshops.

Those who are just about to embark on their university career can join a career exploration session. This will be able to help you pick which career to devote all your strengths and assets on. This is very beneficial especially for those who are thinking of going to college without a clear mindset on what to really do.

There are also those who come to college and are greatly surprised at how much it deviates from the style of teaching in the lower levels. Due to this, they can not really cope up to the pace of the lessons being given to them, resulting in very low grades. Academic advisement is recommended for these students. They will be assisted in various aspects academically, and will be helped in developing a good study habit.

Personal counseling provides for a confidential and safe set up for students who might need help and support more than the others in the population. If you are or you know someone who is in dire need of advisement, then the personal counseling type is the most appropriate. It caters to students suffering from stress, crisis situations, depression, anxiety, or, in more serious cases, mental health issues.

Mental health issues can also be addressed through counseling. Students who have not handled the strain of the new environment may find themselves breaking under a lot of tremendous pressure. If a students show signs of needing the help of a professional, then able counselors will write a recommendation for that student to receive immediate care.

Counseling can be done in groups if you are comfortable with a support system. But, if you are not comfortable with the idea, then you can just talk with a counselor. If talking about it face to face is not really your style, you can also have online sessions.
