Retrieving Marriage Records Florida Through Online

By Claire Dowell

The Florida Office of Vital Statistics is the office in-charge of maintaining Public Florida Marriage Records. Their office has been maintaining the files since the 6th of June 1927. Files of marriages that occurred prior to that date can only be found at the exact county Clerk's office or church where the wedding took place.

Any member of the general public is allowed to obtain the records, upon request, because they are part of public records. Some people obtain the records because they want to trace their bloodlines while others just want to prove the validity of their marriage. When applying for a divorce, a marriage record should be presented to the judge. The records can also be of help if someone wants to prove that the person he or she is about to marry is not married to another person.

In order to make a request, you must be aware of the full names of either the bride or the groom. You must also include the date and place of their marriage. Providing your contact information is also needed. Obtaining marriage documents from the Office of Vital Statistics is not for free. There is a fee of $5 for the first copy and $4 for every extra copy. If the documents you wish to obtain are not located or do not exist, you will not be given a refund. And the time it takes to process transactions is normally two to three weeks. If you think two to three weeks is too long and you want to have them in your hands a lot sooner, you can avail of a rush service. Choosing a rush service will get you the documents you need in not more than three business days.

For marriage to be considered official, a couple must secure a marriage license. It should be applied for by the couple simultaneously at a county Court. The court requires that a couple presents a valid government ID with the applicant's name, birthday, and signature. If an applicant is under the legal marrying age of 18, he or she must present a form that states his or her parent's approval of the marriage. The license costs $93.50. The license is valid for 90 days but the couple has to wait for three days after it has been issued before they can proceed with the ceremony.

Another way of obtaining the records is through privately-owned sites that cater to providing marriage records to the public upon request. There are a number of sites that offer the documents but not all of them are legit. To have an idea if a site is legit or not, look for the feedbacks of other users and find out if they are satisfied with the service or not.

Marriage License Records are also available online. If you are requesting your own files, the process is relatively easy. If you are requesting the files of another person, you will have a harder time getting them because usually they are made available only to the husband and the wife, their lawyers, and any other entity that has the approval of the court to obtain them.
