The movie starts with a catholic priest called Lankester Merrin in an archeological excavation in Iraq. As he goes along with his work, he finds an amulet that resembles Pazuzu statute, which was a demon that he defeated several years before. At once, he realizes the demon is on a revenge mission.
We are then taken to the home of Chris MacNeil, a famous actress in Washington D. C who are playing Ouija board with her 12 year old daughter called Regan. Suddenly in the midst of playing the board, Regan starts to behave strangely. She makes strange frightening sounds and even talks in bad language to her own mother. Furthermore, he exhibits unprecedented strength. She even goes further to shake her bed, much to the horror of everyone.

As days go by Regan kills the babysitter, and the acting director called Burke Dennings at night. The police step in with a detective called Kinderman taking over the case. His first two interviewees are Regan mother and a priest called Karras. Karras had lost his faith in Christianity after the mother died.
Soon doctors recommend exorcism as the only way to cure Regans condition. Chris, her mother calls in Karras to help. Karras refuses at first but after seeing words help me in her stomach and listening to a recording where she talks in reverse, he agrees to the request alongside another priest called Merrin.
The two priest do their best to banish the devil to no avail. The demon seems to enjoy the whole show mocking them and even insulting Karras dead mother. This pisses Karras off and he leaves briefly. On coming back, he finds that Merrin has been killed by the demon. He begs Pazuzu to leave Regan and get into him. After being possessed, he sacrifices his life by jumping through the window. He dies instantly of head injuries but goes with Pazuzu for good. Regan recovers and returns to her mother. Kinderman befriends her in order to get leads to Karras death. This is a must watch film.
