Whenseeking A Spiritual Road, Consider Agalliao

By Jana Serrano

When it comes to matters of spirituality, nothing expresses specific emotions and actions as accurately as the original language. When bible readers, and of course biblical scholars search the scriptures for meaning, the words often need definitions that speak to the complete context of the text. Some words are so wonderful, they jump out and capture the emotions and imaginations of the people who discover them for the first time.

Most astute Christians will recognize some of the more popular terms. The word agape has had generations of believers following its God given gift to share love with others. The family kind of love is something anyone can comprehend. The sharing of it unconditionally is more difficult. In the same way, the Greek agalliao has moved to center front in the thoughts of many. With so many cultural disasters, people are seeking alternative ways to live less troubled lives.

The definition of this word means rejoice, exult, and be glad. But more specifically these actions are done with the instructions to be exceeding. These are actions taken to the ultimate and beyond in terms of feeling.

Several authors have attempted to put into lucid explanations the many facets of meaning found in this word. The trick is to not only describe the literal, but the implied. Writers Aaron Cornett and David Sherman each have books that take the implied meanings for long distance study. Their books teach readers ways to incorporate the principles which derive from the meanings in their own spiritual seeking for better lives. Regardless of the explanations, each gives God credit as the source for joyful relationships.

For such a powerhouse vocabulary word, there are many that have adopted its meaning to use as a strong name for an organization of people working in harmony. One such group is the Development Initiative in Nigeria, working to eradicate hunger, illiteracy, illness and poverty in women and children. There is a praise band named for it, sharing joy with singing congregations. Reidsville, North Carolina is home to the Christian Temple. For many, this word holds the power of inspiration.

Sermons, seminary dissertations and essays are also included on Internet pages published with the theme of jumping with exceeding joy. There are those who look to it as an ultimate power word, reaching many with the goal of including positive thinking in their lives. Catching the feelings and imaginations of many, it has evoked a sense of capability and encouragement for many readers.

Of all of these uses, perhaps the most in depth could be the series written by David Ross Sherman, simply because these books try to give a complete overview of all the ways that the definitions could be applied. He deals with various sentence structures, but also with interpretations thoughtfully meant to help people include the ideals implicit in the definitions in real life situations. These are more than a simple series, but rather an in depth analysis of many concepts.

Encouraging curiosity, this word gathers believers toward a common path. They learn to walk that path with joy. It is a way of living that offers positive contrast to an often difficult world.
